One of the first truly American composers trying to forge a nationalistic style, MacDowell's efforts often centered on sentimental or melancholic themes. This movement, "Dirge," is from his Second Suite for Orchestra. It is loosely fashioned from a native American love song from the Iowa tribe. This sensitive, sometimes sparsely scored edition stresses musicality, balance, and control.
