This set of studies for all treble clef instruments is a repository of 38 scale types, both Western and non-Western, presented by John Gibson in an easy-to-read spiral-bound volume. The first part takes all 38 scales through a pattern that omits certain notes in each group of four and also includes rhythmic distortions to add interest and complexity. The second part puts each of the 38 scales into thirds patterns, an often-overlooked configuration, while the third section takes popular folk songs and etudes and changes them according to the scale pattern. The final section features three advanced etudes that utilize several of the less common scales. A sampling of the scales includes Dorian, Chromatic Hypodorian, Phrygian Flat 4th, Chromatic Hypophrygian Inverse, Lydian Augmented, Ultra Locrian, Blues, Oriental, Hungarian minor, and several derived from Karnatic modes.
